T4.3 DSS Assignment
Problem solving is a technique that is valued by all businesses and companies worldwide. To be a successful problem solver involves informed decision making. But in a world where time is money and new information is uploaded to the web faster than it can be digested, those who need to make decisions need the best help they can get. Decision Support Systems (DSS) are collections or people, procedures, software, databases and devices used to help make decisions that solve problems . Decision Support Systems have a myriad of characteristics in the decision making process that make such systems attractive to businesses.
One of the most attractive attributes of a DSS is its adaptability to a company’s specific needs. This feature can be “standard mode for starter users or advanced mode for experienced users”. (1) Such adaptability of a system can accommodate not only senior executives but also new interns, thus allowing for more flexibility in the work area. “Typical decision support systems are designed for easy use by end users who may or may not be comfortable with using computer technology as part of the decision making process” . (2) The beauty of DSSs is it can “be utilized in making an informed decision regarding just about any action or set of circumstances” (3).
DSS can be oriented in two forms, scenario and goal seeking. The two forms are “the What-if mode - Developing scenarios for solution with the assistance of information systems (usually decision support systems) and the Goal-seeking mode - Establishing the input factors necessary to achieve specified goals (usually with a decision support system)”. (4)
The variability and flexibility of the DSS is a valuable asset is important decision making moments within the life of a company. DSSs can be used by supervisors to monitor the development of employees. “By identifying strengths and weaknesses among employees in their charge, which can take a lot of the guesswork out of performing period employee evaluations”. (3) This frees up more time for supervisors to mentor employees and get necessary work done in time that would otherwise have been wasted doing extensive evaluations.
Ultimately, the most important feature that DSS provides is the information is provides to managers that help facilitate decision making for an entire company. DSS “give managers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of their business” (4). With the ability to easily monitor the advancements of the employees, and the ability to generate what-if scenarios, a manager can make informed business decisions that benefit the whole company. The decision of a manager can either be a very costly one or a very profitable one, the information provided to a manger from the DSS can help make the difference between a million dollars gained or a million dollars lost.

Bluetooth Technology
Bluetooth is best known as a wireless communication device which connects different pieces of electronic devices together to be interconnected over a short distance. The most common type of a Bluetooth is a wireless headset, printers, and even computers which all can communicate to send and receive messages. "Bluetooth uses radio waves (in the 2.4 Gigahertz range), and is designed to be a secure and inexpensive way of connecting and exchanging information between devices without wires." (1) Bluetooth feature now is a standard in any new cellphones, laptops, printers, and many other electronic devices. Bluetooth offers many advantages to consumers such as transferring files to and from your mobile cellphone, backup data files from your phone to your PC, and wireless means no cables and no messy wires to worry about. Bluetooth also offers similar services as Wifi, which both are radio technologies, but differ in frequencies making Wifi much faster. Some other devices that share similar characteristics as Bluetooth are garage opener, baby monitors, and even cordless house phones.
A Bluetooth device can connect simultaneously to eight different devices which is uses spread-spectrum frequency hopping to successfully not interfere with the other devices. When connecting the Bluetooth device the user does not have to click a button or a start up, it automatically connects once in range with the receiver. "When Bluetooth-capable devices come within range of one another, an electronic conversation takes place to determine whether they have data to share or whether one needs to control the other". (2)
Think of your portable GPS in your car as a type of Bluetooth device which connects wireless to satellites to receive the mapping information needed to perform its job. Not only is your GPS device connecting with other devices in comes within range of, the Bluetooth will help conserve lower battery consumption making your device last longer without being plugged in. " Then comes efficiency! Bluetooth uses low power signals, thus requiring less energy. Due to spread-spectrum frequency hopping, interference with other wireless devices is not a question at all". (3) Bluetooth was originally advertised as the wireless headset piece so you didn't need to hold your phone anymore to participate in conversations over the cellphone. This innovation was introduced to the consumer as "hands free" so you can drive in the car with two hands firmly gripping the steering wheel without any hesitation. Before drivers would struggle holding the cellphone while driving which resulted in many accidents. This technology was not only the advancement of wireless communication, but a safer way of talking on the cellphone while performing other activities.

Cloud Computing Research Assignment
Cloud computing can be looked at as several different types of services, but overall the term "cloud" refers to a connection of networks based online. A cloud is like a data backup storage facility online able to be accessed from virtually anywhere with an internet connection. "Examples of cloud computing include online backup services, social networking services, and personal data services such as Apple's MobileMe". (1) Instead of saving files or data to a portable hard drive device, such as a flash drive, you save your media and files onto a virtual hard drive that can be accessed from home, work, or even school. "Cloud services include the delivery of software, infrastructure, and storage over the Internet (either as separate components or a complete platform) based on user demand". (2) Clouds can offer large amounts of storage space and is where the term cloud comes from. The information and data is stored in a "cloud" rather than on a tangible item as a hard drive or storage media device.
My friend has an online storage database which is EFS Software and acts as the perfect example of a cloud. He has almost everything his personal computer’s hard drive would have just accessed through a http: web address. After being prompted a username and password, basically an online file server for any data, file, or media needed to be saved and stored securely. Nothing is originally saved onto the cloud, it works as a "backup assistant" for anything needed to be saved in multiple places for security. It’s great when you need to share large files to multiple users from different locations. This is a huge advantage for companies that are nation-wide. Imagine a huge company needing to share not only data, but large software packaging all over the internet without any trouble. "Cloud Computing is the next stage in the Internet's evolution, providing the means through which everything — from computing power to computing infrastructure, applications, business processes to personal collaboration".(2) Cloud computing is a brand new innovation that not many people/companies have fully taken advantage of. Cloud computing is the future of sharing information within the industry. It’s going to replace old technology such as the hard drive and portable flash drives, but this new "cloud" can hold more space, respond quicker, and is accessible from anywhere. It’s more convenient for the organization and or consumer by allowing an online storage device to replace old existent tangible items.
